Here’s a brief listing of some interesting happenings at Lab49 during the first few months of 2008:
1. Evaluating CEP Products the Right Way:
The CEP market is a relatively new and fast-changing one, with lots of vendors touting similar products. Many of my customers become confused and bewildered about how to even evaluate the various offerings. Meanwhile, most of the performance numbers touted in the press and in marketing literature are largely meaningless. How, then, should firms evaluate CEP products? 2. BEA/Intel/Lab49 Framework for Front Office in Capital Markets:
Lab49, in partnership with BEA and Intel, has released a framework designed to address key challenges in today’s front office in capital markets, such as scalability, low latency, high-throughput, flexibility and high performance together with resiliency. Download the joint white paper titled “BEA WebLogic® Event Server Performance White Paper” a href="/insidethelab/articles#BEA-Intel-Lab49Whitepaper">here or from Lab49 partner BEA’s website.
3. Microsoft Financial Services Developer Conference:
The 2008 Microsoft Financial Services Developer Conference took place March 12-13 in New York. It focused on High Performance Computing (HPC) including trends and best practices. Lab49 presented on “Distributed Caches: A Developer’s Guide to Unleashing Your Data in High-Performance Applications”. Abstract and presentation are available from Lab49 Director Marc Jacobs at his blog, Serial to Parallel to Distributed.
4. The Complex Events Podcast:
Ross Hamilton and I have begun recording The Complex Events Podcast, a series of interviews discussing the case for Complex Event Processing and the next generation of real-time applications in Capital Markets. Episodes one, two, and three are up already, with more on the way.
5. Scalable SOA:
Joe Morrison, a Managing Consultant at Lab49, presented on the "Scalable, High-performance SOA - Challenges and Solutions" panel discussion at the 2008 WebServices/SOA on Wall Street conference. The session covered practical considerations and best practices when building out service oriented architectures for finance. Questions on SOA can be directed to Joe at jmorrison@lab49.com.

7. WPF Contest:
We wrapped up Lab49’s "WPF in Finance Innovation Contest", which challenged developers to create new applications visualizing financial data using WPF. We gave away over $20,000 worth of great prizes from Alienware, ComponentOne, Microsoft, and more. I showcased the finalists and winner at the keynote of the Microsoft Financial Services conference.
As usual, all this (and more) is available on our website under “Inside The Lab” as well.
